After a successful and engaging first event in Bournemouth last year, Sporta is to hold its second awards ceremony in 2017. Held at the historic Ballroom at Sheffield City Hall, the event will take place alongside the Sporta AGM on Wednesday 17th May. The ceremony will again showcase the achievements of leisure and culture trusts, and the positive contribution made by Sporta members to the health and wellbeing of local communites throughout the UK. Over 12 categories, the awards aim to highlight the broad range of capabilties and innovative projects provided by trusts, giving all members the opportunity to highlight one or more areas of their organisation's work. They include recognition for: Engaging Inactive People, Successful Partnerships, Social Enteprise Improvement and Workforce Development. Applications for the awards are now open, with the deadline for all entries being 5.00pm on Friday  3rd March 2017. Sporta will again promote all entries as part of wider efforts to champion the trust model. Full details can be found at the awards section of the Sporta website. Following the publication of the Barclay Report, Sporta Scotland have expressed their concern over its recommendation that charitable trusts managing sport, leisure and cultural services on behalf of councils should no longer receive non-domestic rates relief.

The recommendations, if approved, would have major implications for the future of trusts/ALEOs in Scotland. Trusts have voiced their disappointment that they were not directly engaged prior to the report’s publication, thus leading to some misrepresentation of the role and purpose of such organisations.

After consideration by the Executive, a statement was distributed to the Scottish media on 23rd August, which was published to varying degrees throughout daily newspapers, online and in television news reports.

Please see the full statement from Robin Strang, Chairman of Sporta Scotland here.

Due to circumstances beyond our control the venue for the next Sporta GM has changed.  The Hilton Edinburgh Carlton will now be the meeting space for the General Meeting on the 19th September. Booking forms and agendas will be issued shortly.

The 2017 Sporta 'Trusts in Numbers' survey is now available for members to complete. Completed annually, the survey is vitally important to gather and maintain an updated picutre of the leisure and culture trust sector. For ease, the survey has been broken down into two parts: a very short summary questionnaire, and a broader survey which captures some headline details about your organisation.

All members are strongly encouraged to complete the survey by Friday 15th September. To access a link to do so, or if you have any other questions, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Sporta's next General Meeting will take place on Tuesday 19th September 2017 at The Holyrood Hotel, Edinburgh. Further details to follow soon.
